Stressed about my new RTC Shovelnose cross

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I was going to try massivore next, I have sinking carnivore pellets now and he hovers over them but no grabbing for it yet (the other fish are loving them though). I did notice this morning that his belly was a little bit rounder so I am thinkin he was eating scraps after the lights went out. He already has developed a routine, he sleeps in the same exact spot during the day(Underneath one specific artificial plant leaf), he is more active in the evening and after I shut the lights out. The LFS told me when they are small like this that will tend to be more active when the lights are out until they get a little bit bigger, and then you will see them more active in the day.
I was going to try frozen from the LFS or buying shrimp/tilapia from the grocery store, any specific guidance on this? Ill have to look into the nightcrawlers, also.

Very appreciative of all the advice coming in!! I was strictly CA/SA cichlids before... this guy is making me a monster cat guy!

I wouldn't worry. Most cats all prefer nocturnal meals. You could try frozen silversides or lancer fish. My gulper loved him some silver sides. That and the oscassional tank mate he'd eat.

Once my guy knew the "routine" he now sees me and begs for food! it won't be long! for frozen/fresh I just stick to anything w/out preservatives ( watch out in particular with frozen shrimp) I will watch my local grocery store for fish sales.. tilapia ect to go on sale.. I will buy one small fillet to try.. if they like it i'll go back and stock up a few lbs and freeze it in portions either "meal" wise or "week" wise. think our freezer tbh has as much fish food as human food in it lol.

and imo you will always get better deals from the grocery store on food then the LFS/petstore. once you start keeping big fish.. you learn where to get good deals on food. lol a 16oz flat pack of krill would last my fish less then a week... and at 12$ a pack... there are lots of healthy and more cost effective foods out there. nightcrawlers and NLS/massivore or the exceptions to my rule and are worth their price imo. instead of corn fillers ect.. i use "fish fillers"

Just think outside the box.. and avoid sacrificing quality food with "cheap" food.

Do yours nap/sleep hard core? Mine picks one spot and seems to pass out for a few hours, only moves if something touches him. The first day he did this, I thought he was sick but later on he sprang back into action and was all over the tank. Today he did the same thing... during the day he has been passed out in that same spot for a couple hours...

Mine hid the first couple of weeks but fed pretty quick on frozen bloodworms. From there he just went to bigger and bigger things til he was eating whole market shrimp from my hand. Plus the occasional mate that annoyed him.

You'll be singing a different tune shortly when he's eating anything and everything. I put my baby in a 20 gallon tank with a baby Aro i was using as a grow out. The Aro was easily the same size as him. He didn't eat for a week despite test feedings. Then one morning I woke up and the aro was missing, TSN was fat. Needless to say, he finally ate.

Thats crazy! He had me scared yesterday, he rolled over twice in a row to scratch his head and the first thing I thought was ich but he hasnt done it since and he has nothing on him at all. He is still eating and acting normal so im hopin he was just scratchin his head randomly. All my parameters are perfect minus 5ppm nitrate
