Yup, Stuartgranti Maleri. Had one awhile back and still ranks as one of the most awesome Africans I ever had. Damn that bloat!

victorians most of them can hold thier own with mbunba, peacocks, and haps, will kill most others, like jewls and kribs,

your red fish is a hap limax.

oh i have seen some striking victorians.... in my tanks check it out

Dem Deadman, nice shots if those are from your tank! I see some Astilapia Lafasciata, Ast. Aeneocolor, Sp. 44, and a believe a Pundamilla Crimson Tide?

Bob, if you are looking for someone local to you, try Dave's Rare Fish, I believe he's in San Antonio or something like that. He comes highly reccomended. The species starting your thread here, is Xistochromis Phytophagus. I have a breeding colony of these. I have 1 female holding now. If you strike out, and can hold off until the late summer, I'll give you a few.

The fish pictured that started this thread is indeed a haplochromis limax, a super rare victorian that is very hard to obtain. The phytophagus will have a lime green coloration in the abdomen and will display vertical bars depending on the mood of the fish. From what I see, the fish pictured displays orange red on the majority of its body and doesn't display any lime green hence the name Haplochromis Limax "Red Chest." To my understandings there are several different color morphs of the hap. limax, but the one pictured seems to be a red chest color morph.

What kind of male is this?
Hap 44 or a zebra obliq.?

That is an Astatotilapia latifasciata
AKA zebra obliquidens. The fish displays red on the belly. Haplochromis sp. 44 don't.

Tydus,

Can the Fulu's easily be mistaken for these Limax's? Because you know, now that you mention it, and I am examining that picture closer, my male Fulu does seem to resemble that quite a bit. I've got a few shots of him when he was coloring up. I got my stock from a seller out in Cali, off aquabid. I'd been pursuing that species for quite some time, in fact the only other species I've pursed as long and still haven't gotten are the Paratrolpeus Menarambo's, due to the hefty price tag they incur.

I might have to put some shots up and have you take a look. I thought maybe I just got a male that didn't get the best of genes or something, but I saw the red sport out first, like as if a deep red shoulder, and then the green by the tail fin kicked in. Is this a species that can easily be mis id'd for each other?

The victorian in the link is a very nice fish and are beautiful as adults displaying lots of red. But without pics of the actual fish you have, I can't really tell what you have since all vics can look so similar. Pics would be great, so that we can give you an accurate ID. :)

I was wondering what type of Hap you have in the picture... because I have wanted to have a tank with Haps from Victoria and maybe a couple Neolamprologus species from Tanganyika... since those seem to be the more docile fish... I have started out with Haplochromis Sp. 44... I have a male and a female... I really do love these fish

You have started out with what can be a stunning Victorian. It is also IMHO the most aggressive Victorian there is. The male once matured will kill off your haps and your NL's.

You will need several more females or you will lose the female you have.
