i recently ordered 2 polypterus congicus.. i was expecting some stripes or bands but they came out plane.. really light greyish color with some random black dots on the dorsal fins.... i'm at work so i don't pics as of now... is this normal though??

Hello,

the most polypterids will show themselves in variant colour variations or even contrasts/patterns. Especially P.congicus tends to extremes - if you look on all those specimens on the pics shown here from Congicus over the time you will see soooo different fish ... sometimes it's hard to take a difference between other - to say it in my own words - "endilcheri-like" specimens.
The colouration/pattern is also correspondenting with the ground/planting of of your tank. This is an experience i won over the years of keeping different bichirs. Some react quickly some react slowly - but they react! Also every bichir needs time to to find its way to a new ambience - in this case a new tank with new tankmates.
So keep patient, Congicus will show its full glory soon ...

Greetings
Uwe

yes, when new and high stressed, sometimes their pattern will wash out completely.

Give it time and the stripes should come back, but your fish might have thinner than usual stripes, or it's a lap that was sold as a congicus.

well, i hope its not a lap.. =(.. been wanting the congicus because of potential sheer size... apprx 3ft possibility.. now "THAT" will be a nice monster in the tank... right now thought its about 12" and it does look pretty good.... i'll wait a bit.. they're not eating at the moment too... they still look pretty though...

Loos like a Nigerian lap to me. BTW Nigerian lap and sub-adult congi looks very similar to each other, especially when they are pale. Congi will usually have a wider head and thicker lower lip.

You need to post pics of your bichir and not compare it to the one in Aquabid, if you want a 100% ID.

here is the pics from camera phone...
