To keep this as short as possible, I have a Wild Caught Female Trimac, who not only looks pretty damn great but it by far the meanest fish I've ever owned. That being said she's little older than 1 year, and has endured 2 massive eastern storms with multiple losses of power. So not only is she brutal to tank mates, she just keeps on ticking. She had a a horrible parasite shortly after acclimating her nearly 7 months back and since then she's just come back even stronger. She will pair up with some males she deems worthy. She did pair with a Zonatus I rescued but I didn't want those two making babies. But after reconsidering, mainly her lack of tolerance for tank mates, she has 1 solution, find a mate or be alone forever. Now the fact that she's wild caught most folks just jump to pair her with a big male trimac, and unfortunately not only are they hard to come by they are costly. Also she might kill her male friend and then I just lost even more $$$.

So that said, what suggestions does anyone have for a Mate?

My thoughts are:
• Full grown Male Cuban
• Possibly a Freddy, or a Mota
• I've love a Beanni but the cost will be to high. Just the name Beanimac is perfect
• Trying to avoid Carpint, RD, Most Vieja
• I currently have 7" Paratheraps Gullutas < good color too, would this produce a Flowerhorn?

She is 7” with fins, but she’s thick and brute. I’m looking to get a male at around 6-9” I have my tank setup with a divider now for potential breeding and safe introductions. And I have the ability to grow the male more prior to letting them meet.

None of the above...keep looking for male trimac. She might kill any of the others too if the aggression has been that bad

Yea, the issue is Rapps wanted like 225 for his 12", which sold now. But another wholesaler wants like 175.00 also.

Part of me wants to give a hybrid a shot; part of me wants her to just be happy with a mate. Virtually regardless of species. Ideally is Bigger Male Trimac would be great, however, I can find a lot of other species at a much more reasonable cost. I have other expenses that super-seed a 200.00 dollar fish. We just had a 12 day power outage up here from Sandy too. So god forbid a winter storms comes and kills the lines again I don't want to chance so a costly loss. If I could find a nice one for under 100.00 I'd be game.

Nice Trimacs, I'm going to keep looking for one that doesn't break my bank but it's just harder than I'd hope lol. But I don't think I can close the door on crossing her, just based on the availability and cost of bigger quality male trimacs.

Thanks. You said you don't mind having to grow one out a bit before introducing them right? My male in that pic is around 10" and still a baby. I got him at 4" in March. He eats like a beast and grows like one too so maybe you can get a juvenile male and grow him out? My guy pounds NLS and massivore.

Yea, from my experiences I've found really lack luster small Trimacs. I was so elated when I got this wild one over a year ago; most I find are so bleak in comparison. I will keep an eye out as I'm very fortunate to have 3 really amazing stores in a 30 minutes radius from me.

That awesome. I wish I had good stores local to me. Here's a pic of my male after I first got him, and a pic a few weeks ago. Lackluster youth doesn't necessarily mean crappy looking adult ;-)
Either way as long as you're happy with your tanks is what matters.
