Im thinking about just taking another pool and cutting it out and lining the bottom of the new "pond" with it so i can see the fish. I think it would be better than sand and i can silicone it to the pond liner. I think anyway.

I've been toying with the idea of taking glass panes from my 180 and building a 12' wood frame tank in the future, so I'll be following this thread.

Ive been mulling over the idea of a window but i would have to redesign the whole project and sink a few hundred more into the build and since i have a 336 gallon tank i need to finish building in my dining room i dont think i will sink anymore than absolutely necessary into this one. I still have to design and build the sump/waterfall for this as well so i think the window is out for now. When i am in a more permanent living situation or i buy the land i want this summer and build a barn on it for my fish i will build some really cool stuff then.

Well after a good 4 hours spent today working on it i got it finished. Now i just need to order a liner.

Now i just need to build the sump/waterfall, i may build two not sure yet, buy another pump and then i think i have decided to go with some white sand for the substrate, maybe some play sand? any ideas from anyone would be appreciated. Just not sure what to do for the bottom. 4' deep i want to see my fish lol.

I would go with the white pool filter sand, its cheap and the rays will probably love it.
Impressive stock list, those are some monster fish.

Ok excellent, thanks for the idea. Thats the way i will go then. Im thinking i will go with a 4-6" deep bed that should be plenty. Cant wait to get it up and running. Probably be a couple weeks before i have it totally complete.

Running a deep sand bed or any sand for that matter could be detrimental to a submersible pump and overhead filter u plan on running. Id throw some white/tan tile one the bottom and forget about the sand.

You think it would affect a submersible pump suspended half way down? I was thinking of mounting the pumps at the 2 foot level. How do you anchor the tile down to the bottom? I may just go with that. I feel like they would have to cause a lot of commotion to get sand 2 feet up in the water column. Am i mistaken? Just trying to cover all possibilities here.

I think ud be ok half way down for the pump...wasent sure if u were gonna run it right on the bottom or not. If you go with 12-20" tiles they shouldnt move at all but i suppose you could always tack them down with silicone to assure they stay put. Loctite pl roof and flashing sealant is used alot by the koi guys for liners and can be found at hardware stores. 3m5200 silicone will also work but is pricey. Not sure how permenant u want it to be, normal silicone should work just fine for the tile, its not like u need it to be water tite or anything. Some people also use blue/grey tarps over black liners for better viewing.

Ok thank you very much for the advice. I wasnt sure how the best way would be. Ill have to look into each option and see what is the favorable route. Im interested in the tile for sure so ill go check out Lowes tomorrow and see what they have. Thanks again and ill post more soon when ive made more progress.
