Struggling with stocking a 180g

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So getting out of the geography conversation I think the bichir complicates things a bit. Letting that dream go for a bit and focusing on big cichlids that work as a pair in there are synspilums, blackbelts, robertsoni, Texas, severums, red tiger motoguensis, blue tilapia, parrot cichlids, green terror, or snook cichlid. Some of these will work with the del some will not.

I wish I had this problem of an empty 180.

I was thinking of Senegal bichir. But it's not essential - what is essential is multiple big active fish. I don't want just one or two animals. Especially at the beginning where I'll have a 6' tank with 2 3" fish!

I understand wanting more active fish around it. I am just not sure on the bichir. I am concerned some of these fish will pick on it. Others could speak to that. I also like the oddball idea Kelly_Aquatics Kelly_Aquatics has a good list there, but that isn't what you asked for. I think the SDs will go with most of those in a 180. Other fish that could work in there depending on what cichlids you go with could be some large rainbows, barilius, clown barbs, rohani barbs, BA tetras, ctenopomas, snakeskin gouramis, or pictus cats.

My vote goes for vieja melanura. I keep two in a 135g. You could just buy a group of them and grow them out and re home whichever ones start getting picked on.

I have been struggling to find good tank mates for my melanura but it’s not impossible. It’s best to get the community fish first and grow them out a bit before you add your cichlids. I think the vieja might even work with a bichir, though I’ve not any experience with bichirs

Yeah, the SD, bichir,, oscar setup was an idea but it's not like I am building the tank around any of those. If I get some big active fish and none of the fish I mentioned work, that's fine too.

One of my best combo of fish involved bichirs and a big pearsei. The pearsei being a vegetarian didnt eat the tilapia and raw shrimp meant for the polys and a big pearsei is very oscar like in personality but just bigger... much bigger.

I really like the pearsei idea. Big fish but relatively docile - I don't need a big predator. The hard part is finding one I think but I'm going to reach out to my LFS.
