I got a 55 gallon tank for my birthday about a month ago; I have had it up and running for the past 2 getting everything cycled and ready.

Now it has come down to picking out what type of Piranha I want to keep.

I know reds can shoal, and golds should more or less be kept alone.

But it’s really hard to pick.:nilly:

Can anyone help me out here! Or recommend a better piranha to keep.

Do you plan on upgrading? If you dont plan on upgrading your tank within a year or so then I would go with a single gold spilo, or even a sanchezi or irritan. I hear people say a 55 could hold 3 reds for life but I still wouldnt try a shoal of reds in smaller than 75.

agreed

Do a Exodon paradoxus tank get about 20 of them .

They also love live feedings .
These fish shoal in groups of no less than a dozen and no more than 50. Larger schools are often comprised of younger fish. Insatiable insectivores, they will tear apart any invertebrate unfortunate enough to fall in the water or get in their way. The jaws are strong enough, and the teeth (particularly the enscissors) sharp enough to bite a clean hole out of most organisms. A nip from a larger individual is capable of drawing blood. An aquarium of 50 gallons designated to a shoal is the best way to go. They might even breed in this sort of situation.

That sounds really interesting. I might consider them for a different tank like a 45.

I'm really looking at a Piranha though.

How soon would I need to upgrade a tank though with lets say reds? In more or less then a year?

no matter how many you get to start a shoal, you should probably upgrade within the year, but if you are planning on upgrading, you could fit quite a few in there to grow out for a few months

you could do a rhom growout. it would be good in there for quite some time.

S. Sanchezi would work for life

Get the gold spilo/mac. I just got one. You will not regret it. They are crazy. Mine was chasing fingers within hours after being shipped.

every fish is different. some fish will be shy for months and others will be aggressive right away. you cant predict this.
