Study- Compatibility of Largemouth Bass and Peacock Bass in the wild

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Doesn't anyone else think it's odd that they used LMB fry that were double the size (or more) of the Cichla fry? In my non scientific mind, that could account for a great deal of the losses in the mixed treatment (predation). . . the study would have been better served to use equally sized fry to start with.

I have only kept Pbass a couple times (only small ones) and never mixed with other fish, I have mixed LMB with SMB and Rock bass. My experience was that the LMB were more aggressive feeders but way more fragile with regards to health than either of the others

I guess I'm not just a lurker anymore LOL

wow. my brain feels bigger already from reading all of that! im really surprised at the outcome! i honestly would have thought the cichla would have done better than they did. now, if the variables changed (such as introducing lmb to s.a.) i wonder how the outcome would have changed, or if it would have changed at all?

good article! thanks for the good reading!

It's funny that you mention it, because I have a paper that noted that LMB were accidentally introduced in South America when a flood afffected an aquaculture facility in SA. I'll have to dig that up. We constantly lament the introduction and establishment of Amazonian species in America. This paper said that exotic introductions are also a problem in the Amazon. I'll see if I can find the link.

Lake Wilson in Hawaii houses LMB, Cichla, SMB and many other freshwater species as well as Snakeheads. I grew up fishing for both LMB and PBass. So to keep the tradition i've been keeping LMB and PBs in my home aquaria for quite some time now here are some photos! If you have any questions feel free to ask...im gettin ready to head to work but i will be sure to go into detail of my LMB/PB experience...

awesome collection pare! I see theyve gotten along ok?

Great photos....and of course we want details!!
I too have kept LMB and Cichla together, but never long enough to have any real experience and be able to say one way or another whether it's a good idea or not. They were always together in my care while changing out a tank, or while being held for someone else, etc....

I'd like to hear, too. I know a good place to legally catch and keep any size LMB and SMB, so I was going to try after ice-off when it warms up a bit and add one of each in w/ my pb's (after careful quarantine, of course). I'm worried about SMB aggression more than competition for food w/ the LMB, though.
