I have the Eheim 2217 and only owned it for a few months now. I noticed that on the vaccum and pressure side of the hoses there is some kind of material clinging to the walls of the tubes.

Now i thought its maybe algea or some kind of crap, but should it be on the pressure side as well?? That is the water that is suppose to be filtered!

Its not enough to effect the water flow, but it is noticable and looks gross. Its white in color, maybe slightly green and stringy.

What is ??

Just the normal gunk that grows in the tubes. It is kind of funny that it grows on the clean out put side, but it does.

Bacteria will grow anywhere. It's fine. If it really creeps you out, a good soak in hot water and vinegar followed by a scrub with a bristled wire will easily remove all of it. Or just scrub, that works about as well but it will grow back faster.

You can run hot water through them and squeeze each spot you want cleaned. When the water passes through the pinch point made possible by the heat-softened plastic, the muck gets blasted free and flows out. Takes a lot of pinching and spending 75 cents on a bristle is a lot more economical than standing at a running drain squeezing a hose for twenty minutes.

i am going to convert one of my 100g from a HOB to a sump filter and since what i've seen with HOB's and having all of the gunk in the tubing. I was thinking how am i going to clean the tubing or pvc piping when or if it ever get clogged or nasty. Is there anything that you could buy or make that could aide in this type of maintence?
