That’s good news.
Did you taste the venom when you sucked it out?

Also how did the shipment go after it was clipped?

No, I don't think I tasted anything other than my own adrenaline :)

The shipment went smooth, ray ate right away in new owner's tank.

I was a bit nervous about the shipping as I only clipped the large barb, not the smaller one under it; this ray was so docile, however, I don't think it made a peep during the shipping process. You never know though; I've shipped quite a few rays that have ended up in distress after poking holes in the shipping bags during transit...

Why don't you put airline tubing over the stinger to prevent them from poking holes in the bags?

Well I'm happy to hear you didn't pee on it :) as this apparently doesn't work for stingrays. In fact while quite a few think it works for jellyfish most medical pros advise against it.

After such an experience though, I'd probably be tempted to wear something like these lol:

Yeah, I've done this before; see:

I find tubing easily comes off. It is tricky to calibrate the size of the tubing with the size of the barbs. I know in Asia they often wrap the barbs with a bit of waterproof masking tape, but I don't have the nerve to fool around with the barbs to that degree.

What do you use to clip the tips?

Haha I used heavy duty toenail clippers :)

For a really big ray I'd use new top quality titanium garden sheers from Home Depot, tin snips (scissors for cutting metal), or heavy duty cable/wire cutters.

Wow. So would you just grab the base of the tail and hold that to keep it from stinging you. (Typically)

I net the ray, and then put it in a shallow container lined with a plastic bag; then I get a clean t-shirt which I make soaking wet with tank water and cover the ray with it, basically immobilizing it, with the tail sticking out. Then clipping the barbs is pretty easy to do.

Just beware trying this on an agitated ray. If the tail is flipping around spasmodically, I would think twice. :)
