I gave a friend a1/2" festae from a spawn my pair had, over 1 year ago. he called me and said I could have him back since hes moving and not taking the fish. I figured hed be atleast 8-9" . Well I picked him up this morning and hes only 3-4" !! Hes was kept by himself in a well filtered 55 gal., but had 0 water changes and was fed lightly on hikari staple. Hes beautiful and shows male festae coloring as if he were twice his size! Im just wondering if he will start too grow now that hes in a well fed and kept 180??

It's not uncommon for a festae to grow so little in a year. It is not stunted.
Wrong for your friend not to do waterchanges though...

I'm currently raising 11 festae in a 55, as they are very small, and werent much bigger than a dime when I got them a few months back. I keep up on the water changes and such, and then they are moving to a 220 when that tank is setup. However, I still have the problem that some are double the size of others, and one is triple... and I think part of it besides the fish itself is the dominance factor. Two of my friends have 4 festae a piece as well, and in each group, there is one that grows much quicker than the others. I don't think the festae is stunted, I think it just comes down to the individual fish, just like how not all fish from one batch will be state records, nor are all people the same height. Also, you mentioned it was only fed lightly, diet can play a factor here as well.

I have a 3-3.5" male that was an egg 9-10 months ago. Kept in a 156 with twice a day feedings and lots n lots of water changes.

I sold one of his brothers 5 months ago, he was 8' !!! Just shows that my heavy feeding of quality food, 3-4 30% weekly waterchanges, and tank size are helping. Gues Ive got my work cut out

Wow so I guess that means that every single Festae would grow that fast in your care.
You're the best fishkeeper in the whole world. :screwy:

I agree with everyone else. All fish grow at different rates. Quality diet and pristine water will do do wonders. Good luck.
