Well I would think water changes help with the growth of the fish. If no one ever did a water change and just leave the fish in the tank with a filter they would become very very stress and in the long run die. It's like swimming in your toliet, breathing in it, and eating from it. If you do water changes some of the poop gets out and they feel much better? Less stress, less amonia, and less nitrate. I think the less stress the fish has to deal with the more they get a chance to grow up properly.
