Hey MFK so today while looking at my jag i began to get frustrated...my neighbor has a 50 gall aquarium with a full grown oscar and JD and some others....but he NEVER does WCs...and what gets me mad is that anything he puts in that tank sprouts like a weed....i have my jaguar just with a convict and pictus with weekly WCs in a 150 gall and he doesn't grown an inch...the previous owner had him in a 50 gall from fry to 2 inches but never did WCs...is my jags growth stunted? why is he still so small.:( he has been 4 1/2 inches for forever!!!

The better your tanks ecosystem is set up. The better it will handle waist.
My 150gl is set up with a large Ehiem biofilter, And 2x Emperor 400s.
I also changed the substraight to black diamond sand, To eliminate food and waist
getting down in between the gravel. It helps to have a diverse fish community.
As long as you don't have small fry in the tank. Large weekly water changes may not be necessary.

I have in my 150gl
-4 lg Oscars
-5 lg Dempseys
-11 med Dempseys
-5 med Jags
-2 OB Peacocks
-1 lg Golden algae eater
-1 med striped cat

I have not done a Large water change in 2 months!
All I've done is add water, And remove waist a few times.
I tested today for ammonia, Nitrates, And hardness.
It's still perfect! Luckily:)
And mine grow great!

I do try to do weekly WCs, But I've been busy with fry tanks, Cray tanks, And taking a vacation.

Sorry I miss the point :(
Yours can be stunted, Jags can have 1000s of fry.
And in a 50gl, WOW!
I don't know how many he culled, But with no WCs.
It would hurt the growth.

Wow that tank sounds abysmal. By the way, you can't test for hormones which are what causes they fish to become stunted in the first place.

To the OP yes your fish is probably stunted.

LOL! Yes, It needs thinned out. And a WC.
I grow out fish for trading in at the LFS (Blood worms cost money)

And yes, I reposted about the hormones.

thats just a freak occurance, you should swap him for another jag, go to a pet store that just got jags in, or order them in yourself and get a fresh little 2" one straight from the fish farm. then you know its not been sitting in an lfs tank stunting for a year.

in my lfs I got a vieja bifasciatus about a year ago, in 5 months it grew to nearly 7" beat the crap out of some of my stock so i sold it. the fish must be at least 12" by now. meanwhile all his brothers and sisters in the store are still 3"-4", I guarantee if I brought one now, it would only reach half the adult size.
