yea i water change; his fins were nipped alot. the occupants are 4 barbs(the ones like tiger barbs but with out stripes) a pictus catfish

and wut i thought were female cons. they had a lot of orange on their bellies at the store. the cons are really small. from wut i heard male cons can have orange on their bellies when they are young. is this true?

i will try to get pictures up maybe now or when i get i get off work.

Tiger barbs without the stripes? Are these just a different color strain of tiger barb?

I ask because barbs (especially tiger barbs) can be nippy. They might be slowly pecking at your FMs all day and stressing them to death. Just a theory. Perhaps getting the barbs out of there is a good thing to try too.

Good luck on your next FM attempt.

yeah i would get 2 more firemouths pick the most colourful on the fins and put them in the 29 0r the 55 gallon tank alone and put the cons in the other and see if this helps.

29 might be ok for a pair of convicts but its not nearly enough for 2 Firemouths. If you only have 1 get 2-3 more tops and they'll live happily in your 55. make sure part of it is planted and that you have plenty of hideouts for each fish

Good Luck

no guys its not a pair. actually it looks like they are both females. but either way they are most def to small for breeding becuz they are smaller than 1 inch. but 4 some reason it looks like one of the cons lost the orange on its belly. i heard it was okay for males to have or on their belly at a young age.Is this true?

No the firemouths died so i gotta get a fish that can hold their own. i did witness the firemouths getttin stressed out but it was 2 late. ima try jewels.

I don't know about that but plan to get about six then ill see but your con haven't breed yet mine breed every month or so.

So your FM's are gone? You have cons only now?

Something's wrong, this doesn't add up.

I'd put the cons and the other fish in the 29 if you haven't already.

Then I'd get the firemouths for the 55. BUT I'd empty it if it has water in it now, then re-cycle the tank and start over by adding 3 fish at a time til you have a group of 6. Then you will probably form a couple of pairs. I'd keep 2 pair long term and return the other 2 or sell them/trade then whatever you want.

I have to go back and read the posts again cause this is a little confusing

hi your tanks too small for both in pairs, maybe singly they would be better. Also if your con's are bigger than your firemouth's then they would def be harrassing them even if you don't see it! The more space you can give them the better and the more peaceful they will be:)

After re-reading I agree with this guy. I think your best bet is to separate them into the two tanks. Cons in the 29 and FM's in the 55. FM's are pretty hardy and I've heard horror stories about cons countless times. Try doing this if you don't think its a water problem. You should be all set after they're separated IMO

UR OVER STOCKED! Plus if u have a pair breeding pair of cons what do you expect!
