ok here's my 0.02 not really about a bad store but a bad employ
there's a great LFS that i drive like 45 miles outta my way to get to it's a small one but a very good owner and only 2 employees 1 is nice,polite,and has become a good friend of mine i was quizzing her one day i told her i had just set up a 10 gallon tank and pointed to a 6" tiger oscar and said i'll take him he'll only grow as big as his tank like with a bonsia plant
well she refused the sale and i laughed and said just joking miss brenda you know me better than that
the employee i hated was this mean old witch type hag she was extermly rude and not helpfull in the least
it got to the point i memorized miss brenda's work schedula and would only come in when she was working
the witch was selling huge amounts of fish to small uncycled tanks,telling kids that a oscar can be put in with their goldfish,saying "sure you can keep 30 goldfish in your 20 gallon tank they like company" i tried to help but every time she gave me the evil eye and said your 15 i've been keeping fish longer than you've ben alive respect your elders or get outta the store"
well thank the goddess after 2 years of having to do that the witch got fired i talked to the manager and asked why she wasn't working there any more and he said people were complainig to me i told him how she treated me and he was like you are one of the most knowledgable people i know when it comes to anything with fins,fur,feathers,or fangs if you had told me i'd have fired her on the spot

so when working with a bad employee at a family run type shop or even at a chain store if you are treated badly report them don't hide in fear like i did.

The guy who was taking care of the fish put bala sharks, oscars, and goldfish together in a 10 gallon tank for sale! When I asked him what he was doing he said it makes it look "Better".... I had my parents get the manager when he was at the point of putting saltwater fish in the tank

I am so sick of this argument..

Unintelligent people are found in every place at any given time. Includes employees.

You know where this comes from? Ignorance.

People are just stupid, and don't care to learn.. If your taking the time to read MFK, this isn't you.



The other day some old man came in, I greeted him and asked him if he wanted help.. He declined and gave me the cold shoulder, and acted a bit arrogant. He browsed the fish for a while then decided he was ready.

He wanted a single tiger barb, to go with his other tiger barb.. Of course, at this point I am not going to quiz him on his tank size or tank mates because he was an ass to me, and obviously knows his stuff.. Like 2 tiger barbs are a school.

Then he goes over to the african cichlids and picks out a jewel cichlid.. I simply say "You know these are aggressive right?", and he gives me a smug reply about how he has 3 fish tanks, including a huge 29g..

I bagged both the fish in the same bag and said 'have a great day! Good luck!"



Now should I be categorized as a college kid, who knows nothing about fish, and blindly sells fish irresponsibly?

No.

The guy was a complete ass, was super ignorant, and his fish will die and I don't care. I hope they die. That's what he deserves for being such an ******* to me. I could of helped him, the knowledge was there, he just wasn't willing. I could of refused the sale of the cichlid, and had an angry customer.. Which would of been fine with me really.. but I wasn't feeling sassy or felt like arguing with old balls. But I try to avoid conflict when I anticipate it.. the guy was an old and stubborn and I would rather have him kill his fish and think "fish just die" than go around and rip on me, my store, and the knowledge and livestock I had available..

I am not going to bend over backwards to try to 'save the fishkeeping world of ignorance', when 99% of the dumbasses I deal with daily don't care.

If people come ask me for help, they are often surprised at the knowledge they recieve.. but half the time, it's too much and they don't care.. They want magic water drops that keep fish alive and they don't want to do maintenance.. It's just human greed and stupidity.

funny thing is I am good friends with a guy at a local lfs... He knows his stuff, and does not make stuff up and will refuse sales rather than kill fish... problem he is total dick to most people... He knows it... unfortunately his attitude has made it so that some really good people I know will not shop there... so chewing out customers for lying may feel good, and be funny to you and friends, but it will lose you customers. Plus now this person has an even better story they can tell about how they got chewed out and refused their money back, when following the guild lines to the stores return policy... I am truly in favor of letting stupid people know how they have pissed me off, but on the job you should not... I would love to slap a kids for being a smartone... but yea not good for the school or my career, and verbally attacking them and calling them a liar does not work either... I checked... so maybe look at this way just telling the person you could not help them, and let the manager or owner handle it... at least if the store fails it is not your fault...

unless you are angry at the world, then buy a gun and go to the shooting range...

Someday he will be "old balls" that is "smug" and knows all.
He will probably be the one who gets pissed if he's refused a sale because the fish don't mix, even though he "has x number of tanks, "huge" or not."

In his defense though, He is the exception to the rule in the knowledge dept.
Granted, he should not have sold fish that were going die because of ignorance on the customer's part, but, "the customer's always right" right ?
Most folks like us don't ask for help simply because we know more than the "typical" employee in most cases.
We know what we want when we go in, we don't require any help (or lack thereof).
Smug, arrogant, or otherwise.

I started a thread a while ago about how I saw a crappy tank at petsmart you all can read it to prove that I wasnt talking shi7 about petsmart as in "dont go there they suck" type of thing. This "miles" dude pms me and completely tears my thread apart and says Im ignorant and blah blah.. I swear, Id almost put my car on it that this dude is a gen manager for petsmart. I have posted before about other stores he never was defending those but it was always petsmart. and he got all pissy because I said bichirs were selling between 8-10 dollars at petsmart. he pms me and goes.. "by the way they are 5.99" its like dude... we are all here for the same reason (i would hope) that we all love fish. just because he is all super pro-petsmart doesnt mean we all have to be. I blocked him. It just made me furious that someone would actually go out of their way to be such an ***. And he was calling me ignorant. I should copy what he wrote to me it was more sad that hes just so clueless about things. If someone can read my thread I posted says ANYWHERE "dont go to petsmart they suck" or something along those lines feel free to let me know. grrrrrrrrrrrr

Maybe you should continue this with him via PM.
Sounds to me like a "he said, she said" type of thing.
I don't think we are here to to "take sides" in this. We only respond with our personal thoughts, experiences, opinions based on the subject of the OP
(mostly anyway).
Personal differences between you two should be somewhere else.
Most of us dislike "chain shops" for various reasons.
I don't think we need to get into "laundry" between members. Keeping it to the point of the OP is sufficient.

true true, Im just saying I just thought we were all here for the same reason. I think the point is not hey petsmart/ petcos bad blah blah it happens alot at stores. It just seems to happen there and get posted. It all comes down to it being sad when a fish(s) go home somewhere where they dont belong and I do apologise for my post
