The CITES-regulations is a international agreement to regulate the trade of threatened species.
USA have banned all list 1 species even if they are bread in captivity if the import is for "commercial or personal pet purposes"

I remember when Taiwan was first importing them, the locally prices skyrocket so high it was like buying gold...come to think of it, still is hahaha.

even though it seems ridiculous there is a reason, stopping the trade in the material and livestock of endangered species. If you look at CITES you can find a reference to captive bred as opposed to wild stock. This is important if you are ever in this situation. An example of this is the Axolotl as we all know its a common amphibian, but did you know that in the wild it is a threatened species. Under CITES that would make it illegal to keep. The best thing to do is to contact your local wildlife officer. It is always better to work with them than against them.
