I worked with someone who had that mindset... it was interesting when the GPS batteries went dead, they got lost because they weren't depending on the trusty compass, and the chopper spent 45 minutes trying to pick them up.
Everyone should know how to use a compass (unless they don't leave the city). They are cool things, and I always feel safe with one in the forest.
