I guess in 1970, I was the stupidest person in the hobby. At the time you started in the hobby, chances are you were also.

Oh goodness. Be that as it may it doesn't mean we can't share stories about exceptionally bad experiences.

I have a story that will blow everyone story out of the water.

This did not happen to me personally but to a coworker when I worked at a lfs.
A customer came in to buy some or sharks. My coworker asked how "oh what size of tank do you have" customer says "I don't have a tank, my grandson likes to toss the fish into the mud and watch them wiggle around until they die". My coworker tells her "in sorry I'm not catching any fish for you." Lady says "they're just fish". My coworker walks away. That lady is lucky I wasn't helping her.

Maybe not stupidest but most distasteful, least welcoming, least helpful for those who realize their early attempts at fish keeping aren't going well and are looking for good advice and information:

Folks who start topics about how "stupid" many beginners are. We were all beginners at one point and most of us made our share of "stupid" mistakes.

Folks who contribute stories about others as examples of how "stupid" many beginners are.

Folks who contribute obvious BS stories to threads like this about how "stupid" imaginary people are.

Stay classy, MFK.

I seriously wish my story was made up. The store thankfully refused to sell her anything though. Most beginners learn from their mistakes but there are some like parents who think getting a fish in a tiny bowl will be "easy" to care for...THOSE kind of people are the ones I dislike.

O dont tgink this is about beginners making ill jugded mistakes(we have all done that) its more about people who should know better, ie work in a petstore but choose to stay ignorant of the living creatures they are flogging off to any poor soul that belevies there lies, "oh sure, this cute litle catfish with the red tail will be fine in your 75 for life, that tank is massive". Obviously not all lfs are like this but why are the people working there not educated? Even a quick google search would do.

Parents just don't understand.

I don't condone what they are doing as ethical or correct fish keeping, nor am I trying to defend them. The tank is obviously too small, the water looks cloudy and I can't even see any kind of recognizable filter. But unless I'm remembering incorrectly Datnoids are sensitive to poor water conditions and slow growing as well. That fish looks healthy and stable, so unless they just bought it and stuck it in that tank, they must know something about fish keeping our have incredible luck to grow it out to that size. That would imply that they are not stupid, just cruel.
