Sturgeon and Algae chemicals

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'd be super careful. My LFS recommended a product, sorry forgot the name, for my pond. I followed the directions to the "T" and withing 3 days all my koi had blood streaming from their mouths and gills. I lost all my koi, some 10 years old. I was soo mad when I went back to the LFS that the owner later told me he thought I was going to beat him up. I said no, just stop carrying that stuff.

i understand that... but the tank really is fine, lol. other than cloudy.
all water parameters have been 0 or next to nothing for 3 months.
i have 2 ac500s, and a small wetdry on a 150.
only 4 fish under 12", and my feeding is not too heavy

i put a little bit of the chemical in (about 1/3 what should be used on a 150) and in 2-3 hours i have noticed a difference

i will update as needed

What chemical are you using? One that kills bacteria or one that clumps them?

I would go real easy with that stuff, unless i'm mistaken it's a poison, possibly copper, I would be wary of using it with my sturgeons if I was you!

N2N - For what it's worth, I never use any type of chemicals. Most problems can be avoided/fixed with water changes. If it is algae than you can cover the tank with a blanket etc. Post up a pic of that sturgeon when you get the tank looking good. I'd love to see him.

i hate to use chemicals as well ... but after 2-3 months of fuzzy tanks (after trying wc, and blankets, and adding filtration) it was starting to annoy me!!! a friend at the LFS said he would try it
withing 4 hours of using a medium-low dosage, both tanks were crystal clear.

Almost all products designed to destroy algae contain copper sulfate which is not likely chelated (though even if chelated, it is still toxic in high concentrations). Be careful with the methods you are trying to do to destroy the algae. If I were you, correct what is causing algae problems.

working on pictures,... unfortunately my computer is down and i have been using a borrowed laptop.
i will see if i can still upload them or not. i did actually get a fwe good shots of them last night.
