sturgeon tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
the best sturgeon to get is the shovel nose. it will tolerate higher temps. but u will need a huge tank if u want a colony. a white sturgeon will grow 20 inches in 18 months. u will want a bare bottom or sand substrate since gravel will injure its sensetive barbels. you also want as much open space as possible. they will get behind filter tubes or anything else and get them selves into exhaustion. think about this for a while before u start this. THEY ARE THE LARGEST FRESHWATER FISH IN THE UNITED STATED GETTING UP TO 1500LBS IN THE WILD.. GL if u go through with it.

From what I remember reading about sturgeons, they like cool and clean oxygenated water. Use both if you can, but I think you will need plenty of water movement and surface agitation for gas exchange.

i was just trieng to discourage him since he will need a 1000g tank or larger to house a colony of sturgeons for a year and a half maybe 2. after that i have no idea when they max out in aquariums

Yes the powerhead will work in the pool, not tank.

first off, know that it will probably die ... and 2nd, that if it somehow doesnt die, you will need a very large tank, and eventually a very large pond. (or i will buy it :))

as for the tank, use sand bottom, or bare bottom.
cold water is a MUST! 72 or lower
surface agitation is the key, however you go about getting it is a personal preference ... i liked a large bubble wand or air stone, the fish seem to like the bubbles, and it will also break up the surface pretty good
and i will agree with the post above that said you want an open swimming area, and be careful with tubes and stuff hanging down, they WILL get stuck behind things! if you have filter tubes, take a dish sponge, boil it to rid it of chemicals, and then stick it between the tube and the glass. it will save you from finding a dead fish ...

if you have any quesions, please post, everyone will tell you not to do it, but if you will be able to keep them long term, they are great fish

also, it would help to know specifics on the tank/pond, and the species of sturgeon

have you bought it yet?

do i need a powerhead in my tank or just a air pump

Give me some details about your filtration system, tank size, and temps, and I can give you some advice, sturgeon are really not an easy fish to keep.
