ive been following sturgeon in aquaria for a while now. and from what i understand, there are very few "Sterlets" over for sale in the united states, especially in california. they just tend to lable every sturgeon sterlet for whatever reason.

i recently picked up one of 405's sturgeon and have come to the conclusion that it is indeed a hatchery raised white sturgeon.

the first picture i have attached is not of mine, but it is of a juvenile white sturgeon raised in hatchery. note the high back scutes and the not so pointed nose.

the second picture is of a juvenile "Sterlet" note the lower and more numerous back scutes and sharply pointed nose.

its not a perfect ID, but i say white.

also, you cant treat this fish like your average fish. the water should ideally be cold, but pulling the plug on the heater works well for me. also they need a constant supply of food until about 8"s as they burn an amazingly high amount of calories at cold water temps and that metabolism is only increased exponentially by being kept in warmer water. i find a mix of frozen marine food and black worms 7 times a day to work nicely.

good luck with the massive fish :) keep me posted on your progress, i would love to hear of another aquarist having success with these lesser kept cousins of elasmobranchs

Sadly I have to agree with you, the aquarium trade tends to get what ever is left over from aquaculture instead of actually breeding the best species of sturgeon for aquariums. Shovelnose make much better aquarium animals than most any other sturgeon, North American sturgeons for sure. Sadly they are seldom offered for sale and we get totally unacceptable sturgeons like the white and the green.

How big are you talking about? Most of the sturgeon in the trade now are white or green sturgeon, very big fat fish. Hatcheries often carry lake sturgeon which are about the biggest you can expect to find in North America. I think they even sell beluga sturgeon in Europe but I'm not sure of that.
