I actually have a white sturgeon in a tank along with a perch and rock bass. The sturgeon actually annoys me he never stops swimming! I think its because he needs to do that to breath or he dies.I picked up my sturgeon for 30 bucks about 2 years ago when he was 5''
I didnt get a shovelnose because the pet store near me normally only gets in the white sturgeon, they do get huge but dont grow all that fast, I mean yea they can reach 20 feet but it takes them 120 years to get that big! They did have one really cool one that had whiskers like a catfish with a sturgeon body. Its beak was bent up in the air which Made him a real oddball fish it was pretty expensive so i didnt pick him up I cant think of its name it was labled as some kind of sturgeon they had one a while ago..
i bough he sturgeon granuels at a pond store in richmond va, they still have about 20 containers left over. there cheap and you get alot of food in it. really seemed to fatten the strgeons right up.
if you can get captive bred shovelnose sturgeon, they stay relitively small (less than 24' usually) and tolerate warm water extremly well. They are also a slim flexable fish, most sturgeon are think and stiff and need more room to move around. Unfortuantly shovelnose sturgeon seem to be hard to find even though the federal fisheries people recomended they be bred for the pet trade. If you find a source please let me know.
