Sturgeons!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yup Shovelnose are cool!!! I just wasn't sure if you made a type-o and didn't realise I am getting SHORTnose! LOL My purpose for the sturgeon I want to deal with is for ornamental ponds, which by legal definition in our fishing regs in Ontario is considered an "aquarium" .

You are so correct about their biology making them a much better aquarium or pond choice. They are just not available to me. I would not be adverse to getting a few if it became a possibility!!! ;)

My concerns would be them getting through our long cold Canadian winters!!! :(

There are hatcheries here in the states that breed them but they are mostly government run hatcheries, the other sturgeons we get are bred for caviar, the shovelnose isn't really in demand for that purpose but they are bred as fish to be repatriated into their old ranges.
I think this hatchery breeds them but only if the buyer buys the entire spawn.

I don't think they would have problem surviving the winter if they didn't freeze solid, I had considered breeding them a decade ago but my hatchery stopped when I had to sell several years ago.

I am thinking of starting my hatchery back up in the near future but getting specimens would still be a problem.

I recently contacted osage catfisheries. I didn't have the best experience with them about a year ago when I bought a bowfin from them, but with that said...they did have adult shovelnose sturgeon for sale for $275.

Awesome!!! I was in touch with this farm years ago and lost there contact info! Thanks so much for posting their link!! They have some pretty cool fish and I was going to try to place an order way back then but we decided to move so I put all of that on hold. We are setting up for the sturgeon and will be adding another greenhouse this summer so I will have more covered containment for a few new species!!

We have specimens of Yellow Perch, Pumpkinseed, Hi-fin Banded Sharks, Golden Orfe, Albino Channel Cats, and the sturgeon of course. We breed 7 varieties of goldfish with our main focus being the Koi. I want to breed Blue Gill, Pumpkinseed, and Albino Channel Cats. I am looking for a supplier hatchery for some broodstock of Blue Gill, Albino and Blue Channel Cats, Blue/silver Orfe, as well as to purchase some Hi-fin Banded Sharks for resale.

Anyone know of any good places??

I KNOW JOZSEF!!!!! I just emailed him. I have communicated back and forth for years with him. The CITES permits have always been a hurdle for him. It is just the cost, it cannot be a justified expense for him if I don't want a huge number at a big dollar!! He has always been a good guy and thought of me often whenever he gets new information or thinks he might have a lead for me. He knows I can't get a fish from him though I would certainly like to try to investigate getting an Albino Sterlet!!! That would be my "holy grail" LOL Stupid border!!!! :(

Hi Laura,

I've been following your efforts in acquiring sturgeon for the past few years, congrats! I too have been in contact with Jozsef (Florida) regarding his current stock of Siberian Sturgeon, but as you noted, the lack of CITES is the barrier to import, otherwise he'd be pleased to sell them in Canada. In any event, I've been looking for sterlet/sturgeon for over 10 years now and well, no luck... Do you foresee selling sturgeon in the future? Before 2003 (SARA enrolment) I had 3 White sturgeon, they were the best fish I have ever owned. I'd love to have a sturgeon/sterlet again.

Cheers,

Oh, I almost forgot. I found a supplier/exporter in Malaysia that is currently selling Sterlet juveniles for $25US and carries CITES permit. The issue for me is that the shipping cost is roughly $600 for the first 100kg. Whether I order 5 fish or 500 fish the shipping cost is the same. If any other Canadians are interested, we can split the shipping cost ( I don't mind paying a third, if only 3 people are interested). Let me know.
