Hey MFKers I was thinking would it be possible to silicone a 2" think styrofoam pad in my 2000 gallon pond? how do you think it will hold up over time? I was planning to carve it and paint it so it looks like rock and ad some drift wood and real rocks as well.
not a bad idea....would have to look of having substrate with the ease of cleaning a bare bottom take....go for it!!! good luck. just make sure you silicone the styrofoam to the tank
i plaster swimming pools and you should look into a material called "Multicoat." you coat the styrofoam with it and then it can be painted to look like real rock. it also will make it last for a real long time. it will stick to anything. we use it to bond new plaster over old plaster in a swimming pool. it's how im going to do my rock backwall in my tank.
styrofoam works well on the back of tanks when coated in concrete...
just paint and silicone for the bottom of a pond sounds like not the best idea.. sounds like a LOT of work for something thats going to be very delicate and prone to failure..
have you thought about a layer of concrete with gravel and rock set into it before it dries?
this may have its own problems.. (feel free to correct me, im here for info just like everyone else)
ive yet to do a pond but i did it once for a patio and it worked great...

Over time, you will regret it. Silicone won't hold it forever, and the stuff will want to float till the end of forever. With that said, in the long haul it will be a losing proposition.
Do your design/carving and then coat it as previously recommended. Then turn it over and hit the styrofoam with a torch to melt it down to goo. Then it won't try to float on you.
