Just sitting here reading through some threads and I have to ask... Why do some people put Styrofoam under an aquarium? When should it be used and why?

To help with imperfections in the stand.

Correct. To explain further, a wooden stant may not be PERFECTLY flat, and any high spots would put pressure on the tank and could even cause it to crack. By having a layer of foam under the tank any minor imperfections will be smoothed out and there wont be pressure points. The bigger and heavier the tank, the more important it is.

And on a glass tank the foam should NEVER touch the glass, only the bottom bracing. But on an acrylic tank it should touch all of the bottom.

How do you keep it from touching the bottom on a glass tank?

Unless it's an ALL glass tank of course

But for a framed glass tank yes you are right, it's the frame that you are trying to support evenly, and that supports the glass. Of course if the tank is framed and just has glass inserts then the support is less critical.
