Styrofoam under an aquarium

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My manufacturer says put a sheet of styrofoam under the whole glass tank.

I have never seen a tank that is 100% glass.....

Must be a regional thing - most tanks in this part of the world are glass and silicone only.

Maybe we have more faith in glue around here :D

Is that what is called "euro bracing"?

This is my 50gal all glass tank.

It has internal 'euro bracing' with a tie brace across the middle and glass lids that sit on the braces.

And I thought this was how tanks where allways built.

As you can see there is no external frame or anything other than glass and glue.

Ditto bigspizz. If it's made from glass it has bracing.

Do you have a picture of the bottom?
Are you saying your bottom plate of glass lies on the stand?

Is the bottom all glass with no bracing? My tanks have top and bottom bracing with nothing on the sides.

Yes.. the bottom of the tank is one sheet of glass with the sides glued to it. Thats probably the strongest part of the tank.

The top of the tank has internal glass braces and a cross brace. No external bracing anyplace.

Common for even larger tanks to be built this way, 6' x 2' x 2' size ones, and failures seem very rare. The glass does have to be sized correctly of course, and the bigger tanks are fairly thick (and expensive)

This is the tank first being filled - shows the top bracing better.

Bottom of the tank is just a glass to glass join. I didn't have a sheet of foam, so I cheated and put it on corrugated cardboard. Same effect, just not waterproof. But if the cardboard gets wet, I already have a bigger problem than wet cardboard

P.S. Yes I know I need to clean the glass :nilly:

Nice looking Pleco.

You crazy New Zealanders :) I'm glad you aren't having problems but glass typically does not have great strength when supported like that.

Good luck and Cheers!
