Styroform between tank and stand?

Agree My tank needed shims even with foam

the foam is to "soak up" any small inconsistencies in the stand or for debris etc...

i even use it under my glass tanks that i put on unconsistent "stands" like dressers, pallet racks etc... that typically are not completely flat. it works great and is a super cheap insurance.

Is a non-flat dresser or pallet rack a small inconsistency? I just worry that some may be putting a band-aid on a real problem. I think it would be better to use a truly flat surface.

of course it would be better to use a perfectly flat suface, but im personally not going to worry about a small 1/8" bump here or there when foam will absorb that, after all isnt that what the foam is for?

I think it all depends on the size of the bump/imperfection. It is hard to say what foam will and will not absorb. You would have to account for inconsistencies in the actual foam and the distribution across the specific imperfection. There is a real limit to how much a piece of foam will account. This might be something to really dive into a bit further at another time. In what I have looked at, the foam should be geared towards point pressure. Something like a very small rock or piece of debris.

Yeah I agree. I can't imagine the foam compresses much at all? Especially that stuff at Home Depot. I can see foam used for camera cases compressing more and being able to "fill the gaps" of an imperfection but the pink/white stuff wont.

ohh so youve tried it?! its good to hear your experiences with it rather than jumping on the hear say bandwagon.

the OP ask for peoples experiences, i told him mine. in my experience it works to soak up inconsistencies that i encountered. its cheap and has worked great for what i need it to do, and yes the white stuff works great as it is much softer than the pink/blue rigid stuff.

oops sorry, I never tried it (foam). All my tanks sit directly on the stand with no issues. I'm sure if I added the foam to my stands it would work fine...........I guess that's not really a test though.

So for clarification I never used foam or any other product under my fish tanks other than the stand that was built to hold the fish tank. Of course, I don't put my fish tank on the floor or a dresser or anything like that.
