Suams Or Green terrors

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
See from my understanding mayans only got the name red terror because they thought they were the same thing when mayans are smaller as the festae. My thing is everyone assumes that its ok since a certain species is not as common to give something else its name.

It's more like the lfs labeling whatever name sells more. I still remember buying my first ever pair of Red Terrors that turned out to be mayans.

I'm not agreeing with it mind you, but it happens alot and isn't going to change, so I don't harp on it anymore. Common names are rather useless anyway, if I order something I do so with the full scientific name. Prevents the confusion.

But in the case with both the suams and the mayans, people at first DID think they were riv's and festae, which is why they got saddled with the same common name. But even though we know the differance, since the commons names have been with them for so long, you still see people using them.

But that happens with scientific names too, a lot of people still call port cichlids Aequidens instead of Cichlasoma as an example.

These two are two different fish. Silbersaum IMO rivultus is from peru. Silver suam is from equador

Many people say it is, many people say it isn't. It's essentially an ongoing arguement that will never come to a conclusion.

Fact is they are all Green Terrors. Rivulatus is references as "True" Green Terror because it is the original, and generally when someone says "True" Green terror, they are referring to rivulatus. The genus as a whole is a disaster. All 3 species in discussion are great fish, the in my experience rivulatus is very different, in that they are smaller and less aggressive then the saums. But to cover the original point, they can all be called green terrors, they all ARE green terrors, which is why common names are usually worthless. :grinno: Makes the genus that much more fun to talk about though!
