I have read that lighter (white) substrate like gravel or sand can bleach your fish and they look lighter. I personally appreciate a darker looking fish. Is this a fact? I have a baby jag (1 inch) and I think i notice a lighter color since putting him in my lighter substrate tank.

The color of some fish will change to meet there surroundings so it is possible for your fish to lighten its color to some what match the sand. I know my terrors have a much deeper color then my friends and we care for our fish and feed them almost identically except i have black substrate he has white.

I've noticed from switching from white sub to black, is that the fish do tend to have darker hues overall, and the blues/greens pop a hell of a lot more. Just depends on the actual fish, and how they look on both ends (with color, barring, etc). As far as jags, when I switched my old guy to black, he looked way better. The solid black on the bright gold looked great. Also noticed some nice blues in the finnage I never saw before. Faded looking jags just don't look good, in my opinion.

Actaully here's a couple old pictures I found of my Abalios for reference (same lighting). 1st white, 2nd black.
