i'd just go with personal preference? sand and gravel have been treated equally by most of the ca/sa i've kept.

i had a lighter natural looking gravel in one of my tanks and i switched it to dark, almost black gravel and the fish i have started to turn a more richer, darker color. i guess they adapt to the environment?

All my tanks have black backgrounds:headbang2 , and 2 have black gravel, the other 2 have natural!

......I really think the black background helps bring out the fishes color as long as the fish is not extermly dark in color that is:D

I like the black background too. Have gone through the trouble of painting the back of the aquarium flat black. A friend of mine is big on the look, but had a better idea. He uses 90% Limo Tint. Buys it at the hardware/automotive store for like $5 per roll. Looks great and is much less permanent then paint.

yea black it is then! about the dithers i didn't really think of getting any could i put anything else in the 40 breeder? if so what would be a good? what about a bottom feeder?
