Ok, some of you have seen my white silica sand grow out tank for my bichir and a few other fishies. They are all fine but unfortunately the coloured red silica I added isn't slowing down my ornates bleaching. He's starting to really bleach out in colour which is not what I wanted and was hoping would happen at a slower rate. He's comfortable and doing fine (they all are) and now I'm trying to decide what to replace it with. I want to keep those nice bright colours as long as I can.
Black tahitian moon sand: been told can be expensive, but won't leech things into the water. downside, I'm told it's really light and can be sucked into the filter.
Chinese garnet sand: Can get easily, colour is a dark red. Inert, but not really sure if it will be ok with my fish. Also much heavier so won't get sucked into the filter.
Fish in there are african brown knife, 1x sen, 1x ornate, african butterfly, and 1x krib. They are all still very small.
Curious on peoples opinions, haven't really used sand other than white silica so not sure. Also not sure if any other sands should be used instead, was really hoping for a black to help keep the ornates colour though. And I've heared very mixed things about pool filter sand so not sure about that.
