Kolossus, sorry to hear about your past losses. I guess besides a good Q schedule - to also never let neighbors or others that are unknowing about the hobby take care of your rays!

I'm sure Kolossus usually takes good care of them. I think it would have been better if she didn't feed at all, as rays with some nice fat reserves can hold off on eating for a while.

i have had both sand and barebottom in my tank.
however, i never find any problem with the rays regarding the sand or the glass panel?

the only reason why i now keep them in a bare bottom tank is because the rays are getting so large when they swim they kick up all the sand into my external filter, if that wasn't the problem i would still be using sand.

Currently, If you compare just the disease outbreaks - it appears that it occurs more in tanks with substrate.

It'd be interesting to see if the type of substrate plays into it at all, especially with the discussion of silica sand lately.

I didn't answer the poll because I've only had my rays since October, but so far so good. I also didn't quarantine, which I regret, but everything seems ok thus far. Poo seems to be ok concerning all the fish in the tank as I've been keeping a close eye on them.

I've been using 3M ColorQuartz... all I have to say is that it is an awesome product. Too bad it is being discontinued this Dec. Going to pick up 2-3 more bags and keep them in storage.

Yeah, I have 100 pounds in the garage waiting to go into a 180g
