Substrate for CA cichlids?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'd go with a smaller type of gravel like pea gravel as mentioned above..

Thanks for all the comments guys. I think I will just cover the intake of my filters and keep my sand.

This is what I use.... CaribSea Eco Complete Plant Substrate

It has really small particles and larger gravel and as you add it to the tank the small particles will go to the bottom and the larger ones will stay on top. Plus it has live beneficial bacteria. The only thing is when you clean the gravel a lot of the small particles will get ducked up . it doesnt get kicked up that bad either.

I also use this for my Jaguars, Motas & Flowerhorns.

First you want to stay away from the LFS for this product since they will rob you. Just go to you local home center and get the size you want.

yea waaaay to expensive. I would be spending over 100 dollars to cover my aquarium bottom.

Are you referring to the product above? I doubt that they will have anything like that.

I've got a. hogoboomorus, convicts, fenestratus, and centrarchus in my tank now. They all dig, buy with the pfs, it just settles back down quickly.

The prefilter is the way to go if you don't want to swap to the pfs. Just make sure to clean it pretty regularly. I let some of mine go for a few weeks one time and the flow to my ac110's was dramatically affected.

Thanks for the tip. I will make sure to clean them when I do a water change. And you have a very cool stock list by the way.
