substrate for convicts..

So I have a proven pair of convicts, had them a couple weeks now and I'm about to be moving them to their own 29gallon tank..Question is, does substrate help at all in breeding? I was thinking of going bare bottom but I also have some sand and really small size gravel I can use..Just wanting some opinions on this from other people.
 
Haha, I don't think you need to worry about substrate, use whatever you like. Convicts will breed in a can of mountain dew. They don't need any special treatment. Trust me, Ive had well over 1000 convict babies born in my show tank with HUGE fish in there.

Bare bottom with a clay pot laying on its side....TA-DA!!!!I have several pairs breeding for me right now....At least two of them have laid eggs on the side glass...When breeding cons, substrate is only cosmetics, not a nessesity.....
 
Awesome, thanks for all the feedback, yeah I threw them in the 29gallon last night just bare bottom with a clay pot and a few large rocks. Now we wait, haha
 
Noticed yesturday that my convicts finally layed some eggs..I believe they laid them yesturday but not 100% sure. I'll just have to wait and find out now!
 
Yeah, went home for lunch and decided to eat/watch my fish. Then I noticed my female convict swimming upside down in her clay pot, upon looking I saw eggs, not sure if she was laying them or just fanning them. I've read it usually takes 3-4 days for the eggs to hatch?
