dats dont need substrate. and i wldn't advise it.

during feedings they may swallow it.

Agreed.

My next tank will not have substrate..or very little.

I have had pool sand in with my dats for several years. They don't seem too affected by it.

It's a display tank so I don't want a bare bottom, although I do realize the benefits and have other barebottom tank.

well if they accidently get sand in their mouth while feeding, wouldnt they just spit it out through their gills?

Yes, they will spit out the food and suck it back in to get rid of the sand. As they get smarter they haven't gotten mouthfuls of sand in a long time though.

I've kept barebottom, gravel, and sand. Barebottom is definately the easiest to clean, but not as attractive. Mine have done well on all three types.

VERY LIGHT AMOUNT'S OF SUBSTRATE I.M.O ARE THE BEST WAY'S TO MAINTAIN A AQUARIUM...:D BAREBOTTOM TANK'S MAKE UP FOR LACK OF SUBSTRATE FOR BACTERIA TO COLONIZE IN BY USEING MORE AND OF BETTER QUALITY MEDIA TO SUPPORT THIS FUNCTION OF THE AQUARIUM...;)

I have some with sand and some with gravel. No probs anywhere yet. Mine always seem to love driftwood!
