Okay, I have a 55 gallon tank and I want to put river rocks in it but I don't know what size I should have. I want something big enough so that they can't put it in their mouth when they're old, but I don't want huge rocks either. Is this possible? If so, what size?

you can find the larger pebbles in decorating stores, usually there is a whole section of decorative rocks and glass stones. it would cost you more than gravel though. i have used river rock stones with goldfish and i really didn't like it. there is a lot of space in between when they are in the tank and they capture a lot of waste that falls down and stays there. also when you try to gravel vac they make a lot of noise and i always worried my goldfish was going to have a heart attack or something. i switched to sand and have no problems.

In nature, fish regularly put gravel and sand in their mouths. That is how they dig. Don't worry about the gravel size.

:iagree:
They're just doing what comes natural. Why dont you want your goldies 'chewing' on the gravel?

eh. fancy goldfish aren't technically 'natural' fish, they were created and bred to be watched over in ponds and tanks. as such, they are pretty much on the far side of dumb and when they try and *eat* the gravel they can choke on it. i've seen a few instances of it happening over on AC.

While I'll keep my opinion of that to myself :naughty: , fancy goldfish have been known to get intestinal blockages from eating gravel.

If I had goldfish I'd go barebottom anyway. Who wants to clean substrate in a goldfish tank.
