hi, im about to transfer everything in my 40g to a 55g. since i have to get more substrate, i thought i would get something better than what i have right now. currently my substrate consists of sand, crushed coral, and gravel all combined from my many years of fish keeping... the plants are doing fine in this gravel but since i need to get more to fill up my 55, what kind of substrate do you guys recommend?? i was thinking about the flourish substrate... anyone use this? play sand? pool filter sand? or soil even?? any opinions, advice, tips are greatly appreciated... thanks

im using pool filter sand for my arrowhead puffer because they like to burrow. Pool filter sand are extremely easy to rinse but if you plan to put lots of plants i would recommand eco-complete or flourtie which both have nutrient that plants needs ie. iron, potsstium, etc etc. Flourite you really need to rinse it alot because it does have lots of residual dust. Eco complete black sand doesnt just place it in the tank put a plate on it that pour water on top so your tank wont get too cloudy. I find that my plants do better in that black sand but this is my opinion. Other members here might have their plants do better in flourite or other type of plant substrates. Also by mixing other substrates with your sand and crushed corals wouldnt look good due to colors and size.
