i like sand but that my own prefrence
what kind of sand can you use with an aquaclear and where can I get it? some of my fish scoop the sand up and spit it out, others kick it around and it gets caught in the impeller. I tried crushed coral (white color) but it washes the color out. any help is much appreciated.

That is one reason I am not fond of sand, every sand I have tried does that. Get a sponge pre-filter for the intake tube

And DIRTY.

Wait a minute... Are we talking about sand or women of questionable morals here? :lol2:
lol!
but the play sand can create big problems if it gets in your filter!
I would like to use a prefilter but the lfs doesn't have it. then again it defeats the purpose of using sand. sand makes the tank look great! a prefilter sitting in the middle of my tank would look awful.
does anyone know of a brand/type of sand that is heavy and sinks fast instead of floating around until the water calms down? if so were can I get some?

I just mean the little sock of open cell foam that goes over the end of the intake tube, also make sure the tube ends a couple inches above the sand. I did not even think about the big prefilter boxes, I have only used those in ponds.

Sand is not a good idea in a cichlid aquarium. Most cichlids like to redecorate their aquarium. If they try to redecorate with sand, you are going to end up with some burned out impellers in your filters. That is just my oppinion.

I've got sand in all my tankz....love it. Sand Blastin sand is cheap and comes in large bags...plus its fine...really fine. I have various types of sand though...love it all. It can get sucked into the impellers though....but doesn't happen to often to me...been runnin sand for two years now and no burned out motors yet...:D
