Although I love pool filter sand, small gravel is probably the best bet in your situation

where is the best place to get really small gravel. when you say gravel is it really fine crushed gravel

pea gravel is what I would use. I get mine a Lowes or any other hardware store and rinse the hell out of it before using it

yes the best size is called a 8 mesh or a 5mm stone same rallysman is talking about...

a nice natural look comes from ummmmmmmmm Lone Starr #8 mesh 2 dollars for 50lbs
