Do you have really big fish? I haven't had a problem with that, I have enough current that most of the poo ends up in the filters but if I had stuff like big cats etc I could see how the poo would sit on the sand and look nasty. For me it's the opposite, I can't imagine switching back to gravel.

pool sand? never thunk it..... maybe a dumd q but what color is it?
It's sort of an off-white cream color, like a beach. If you want another color you can get Colorquartz by 3M, it is more expensive but you can get darker colors like black if you like that better. I haven't used it yet because for me the filter sand is fine. There are different grades and if I remember right the T grade is the larger grains, so it doesn't get into your filters.
All of my tanks are bare bottom except my planted tank. I've been in the thought process of switching all the bare bottom over to pool filter sand for the reasons that have already been said. Its extremely cheap too which is an added bonus if you loose too much sand when you vac the bottom.
I only keep 1 large tank. In this I keep natural gravel and love it. All of my 5.5 gallon tanks 10 of them which are used for breeding and growout for smaller fish are bare bottum. These are in the basement and no one really sees them. The big one is in the living room.
Krylon makes a spray paint that looks like gravel when applied. I paint my tank bottoms with that and the back black. Looks pretty nice imo. When filled, the bottom looks like gravel, but without the excess maintenance.

A few powers heads pointing the right right direction will keep the sand clean and no need for vaccing - will also work on barebottom.
This is really a personal preference. I use sand in display tanks and bare bottom on grow-out and stock tanks. Stay away from play sand unless you have small fish, it's too fine and will get sucked up in your filter, it's alos alot dirtier than PFS.
