Substrate Question, Need Help!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I filled a 5 gallon bucket about halfway with sand and continuously filled it with water, while stirring the sand, and then poured the water out, making sure the sand didn't get poured out with the water. You'll notice the water will be very opaque at first but will slowly become more translucent as you pour out the fine particles that are suspended in the water. I think I filled the bucket and poured it out about 5 times for each bucket of sand and it took about 6 buckets to get my 75 gallon tank to the level that I wanted it.

And play sand is okay?

Yep. I use play sand in my 55g paludarium, as well as my 110g. It looks more natural than PF sand, but it is dirtier. It takes longer to rinse, but worth it in my book.

Ahh thanks for the info, simple enough but wanted to make sure how to rinse. I guess ill pick up some play sand from lowes maybe for both of my 55s. Thanks again.

Good info guys, think I'll be going with sand when i put my 125 together. one question on that though is cleaning... With the gravel I use the vacuum type siphon when doing water changes to get all the "Crap" out of the rock. Do you use the same method with sand? seems as though you'd be pulling a lot of it out with the water, but I have never had a sand bottom tank.. thanks

I don't ever have to suction the top of the sand in my mbuna tank because the current blows any detritus to my filter intake. In my Xenopus tank I just get the siphon close enough to the sand to suck up the mulm but not the sand. Current really helps in a sandy tank though.

I've been thinking of doing the same thing. would it be benificial to vacuum the rocks in my 125G thoroughly before removing them? and I have sand from my 300g that I removed. Could I use this sand still or would it be ill advised?

I would thoroughly rinse the sand from your 300g before putting it into a new tank, otherwise I don't see any problems unless there was a contaminent in that tank. And it certainly wouldn't hurt to vacuum your rocks because I am sure there is some detritus and other stuff attached that will just fall into the tank when they are removed.
