Substrate question

I've tried calling the company to ask if they have any dealers in Long Island but they said no and to try my local hardware store. Do you know if Lowes or HomeDepot might have them? That's about the only hardware store I know near the area.

Also how much do I need to fill a 150g tank? I'm not really looking to use liveplants. I just want it for decor.

about 1 pound per gallon is the general rule sorry I can't answer your other question.

I couldn't find any of those colored quartz in Lowes or HomeDepot. But I did find a black sand online. Has anyone ever tried this -> http://www.thatpetplace.com/freshwater-substrate-aqua-terra-black-sand-5lb? $4 for 5 lbs doesn't seem like a bad deal. I just don't know how fine the grain will be or if it's going to be a pain to clean it out.

Hello; If you wish to use sand, a way to prevent some of the problems is to sift out and discard the very fine material. I was able to purchase some construction sand from a local place a couple of years ago at the rate of $20 a ton. You willnot have to get that much, I used it to bed some drain pipes but sifted a bucket full of bb plus sized sand particles. I have used kitchen colanders and have rigged sifters from screening wire. It depends on the size particles you desire. It is cheap enough this way to discard the fine stuff or spread it in the yard.
The fine stuff in sand can cause problems in a tank.

i agree,fine sand/particles will eventually end up in your filter.PFS works well,or try to find quickcrete all purpose sand,dark natural color,larger grains.i have not been able to find it in home depo near me

Unfortunately (or fortunately), the tank I bought came in with sand and a painted background that matches up very well. So as much as I want a black substrate, I would rather not waste what it already came in with.

Here's a pic of how my tank currently looks like...

It's about 90% done...Just need to do some minor changes, add more filtration and change the wood trim. I'll post more pics once everything is finished.
