Substrate question

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Lol time to add sand to cover up the mistake, I bought some sand blasting media from tractor supply it was called black bull garnet sand 80 grit. It's really fine but as long as you rinse it out my bigger guys don't stir it up too bad. Good luck with the search for the perfect substrate.

Here's a pick of the black bull

I just ordered a bag of Estes Color Quartz in Chocolate. I wanted a darker substrate but I've used black in the past and wanted something different. Hopefully it will be what I'm looking for.

Will do. They called me back and said they were out of the chocolate so I ordered black instead. When the Chocolate comes in I'll order some of it and mix it with the black. I'm hoping the black and dark brown will look good as a substrate.

I dunno...my bichirs are on a tan pool filter substrate, and my lap is still dark with deep patterns. he hangs out under a piece of dark driftwood and the tank has bits and pieces of that plant substrate mentioned above, so thats probably why he's keeping his darker coloration.

I also purchased this from Amazon. It's a great size and really good looking but at $10 for 3 lbs it would cost a fortune to do my 125g. I tried contacting them for a bulk discount but I never heard back.

i have play sand and and my laps patterns dont show up at all. i sold another lap and saw pics of her in the new tank with black sand and she looks a hell of a lot nicer. eventually i'll get around to replacing the sand with something darker..
