substrate question

As to expense, it's pretty cheap. I paid $30 for 50 pounds. 50 pounds of gravel at Wal Mart would have been $40. 50 pounds of Tahitian Moon Sand (also black) would have been at least $75.

The pictures show 50 pounds in a 55 gallon tank. It's about 3" deep everywhere. To clean it, you just hover the vacuum about 1/2" above the sand and suck up any poop or food. You can take your hands and kind of move the sand around to release any built up gas. I don't know if this is actually neccessary with the Color Quartz or not. I haven't experienced any gas bubbles building up in the Color Quartz like it does in real sand.

What else?:D

that stuff looks sweet. i have a question, so when you vacuum you have to hold the tube above its just like sand?

Yes, just hold the tube about 1/2" or so above the sand and suck the poop/food up. It's a lot easier than people make it out to be. It's not magic. If you start sucking up sand, just raise the tube slightly. The amount of sand sucked up is miniscule.

It's been my experience with the T Grade Color Quartz that even if you get some in the tube, it just kind of swirls around and falls back into the tank. The S Grade, being smaller and lighter, may not work the same way. I don't have any experience with the S Grade Color Quartz.

I just happened to find the receipt for the Color Quartz I got. It was only $21.65, not $30. Much more of a bargain.:)

I had to order it through NT Ruddock, a company in Ohio. They have a distrubuter in my town, Charlotte, NC. I picked it up at the distributer's warehouse here locally.

If you want some, you'll have to check NT Ruddock's site and see if they have a distributer close to you. If not, you'll have to have it shipped.

Here's NT Ruddock's site...

Just call them and find out how close one of their distibuters is to you. You can also try calling your local pool supply stores. They sometimes carry 3M Color Quartz and/or a similar product.
