I have a coarse sand type substrate that is about 4 inches deep, its almost impossible to vac. My question is ,,,,,,,,,,,Will this harbour any water quality issues?

Howdy,

I have the same depth playsand, at some spots it's 7''. However, I have Malaysian Trumpet Snails (Melanoides Tuberculata). They dig thru the substrate and, thus, eliminate anaerobic spots. No problems with sand at all. Those snails are my little helpers. I don't even vacuum! Heck, I wished they came in a terrestrial version for my house!

Yes, it's like a very fine gravel of coarse sand ,whichever you choose to call it. I think i will change the substrate to regular pea size aquarium gravel, easy to gravel vac. and no worries,,,,,,,,,,,thx guys !!

I use sand in all my tankz, sandblasting sand, river sand, you name it. 2" deep and it works perfect. Cichlids stir it up so its good to go. Plus all the waste and stuff stays on the top instead of going down the cracks and stuff like gravel...so its easier to clean...you should give it a try! you'll love it and so will ur fish!

I have used coarse sand/fine gravel several times, just slightly reduce the flow in the gravel vac and you should have no problem.

remember guys he has a coarse substrate meaning its not sand. . .

more like. . . . .gravel

No difference. Those snails are tough. I gave some to my buddy with 1/2'' diameter gravel , and they still dig thru. Nothing stops them...
