I have the same depth playsand, at some spots it's 7''. However, I have Malaysian Trumpet Snails (Melanoides Tuberculata). They dig thru the substrate and, thus, eliminate anaerobic spots. No problems with sand at all. Those snails are my little helpers. I don't even vacuum! Heck, I wished they came in a terrestrial version for my house!

i have sand that 1'' - 4'' in places and after i hover i just give it a rake to stop it becoming anaerobic
I use sand in all my tankz, sandblasting sand, river sand, you name it. 2" deep and it works perfect. Cichlids stir it up so its good to go. Plus all the waste and stuff stays on the top instead of going down the cracks and stuff like gravel...so its easier to clean...you should give it a try! you'll love it and so will ur fish!
I have used coarse sand/fine gravel several times, just slightly reduce the flow in the gravel vac and you should have no problem.
