Does the color of the substrate used in the aquarium affect the colors of african cichlids? I've had other fish like bichirs that would be darker on dark substrate and lighter on light substrate....I have black sand in my 240g and wanna cover it with white sand but i dont want my cichlids colors to fade out from doing so.

Thanks

it seems like africans look best around white sand. i guess thats why people use the white holey rock. but i would use white rock and white sand

I prefer play sand to PFS, the lighter colored substrate tends to wash out the colors of the fish in my opinion. Any dark coloration in the fish usually comes through better with a slightly darker substrate.

Ya, to each his own, my play sand still makes my tank cloudy despite washing it 70 times before adding it. PFS is a lot less dirty IMO and I also prefer the looks of PFS over play sand. I agree though, lighter colored substrate does wash out the colors of fish to some extent.

I just use black sand. Makes my fish really dark but I like them like that lol
