Yes it plays a major part. The best color used depends on which AC you're keeping. C. Gibbs in dark substrate will bring out the purple. In colorful tropheus, white or light color substrate will reflect your lighting and make them pop.
Does the color of the substrate used in the aquarium affect the colors of african cichlids? I've had other fish like bichirs that would be darker on dark substrate and lighter on light substrate....I have black sand in my 240g and wanna cover it with white sand but i dont want my cichlids colors to fade out from doing so.
not sure bud, but my SDs do,, b4 i brought them they wer in a black tank and they seemed very dark,and now ther over a mixed substrate they are kinda spotty,
