I just recently got a flowerhorn and have been doing as much research as I can on them. The one thing I notice is very common when I look at pics and video is that there is no substrate. Why is this? Are FH's happier with no substrate? If it will benefit my FH I will remove the gravel from my tank.

I do not have substrate in my tank, because i can see the uneaten food and clean it out. But, i also don't own a FH.

I wont be too worried bout losing beneficial bacteria, instead watch out for the dirt that could make the tank water murky when you are taking out the gravels..
Try replacing gravels with coral chunks.. They help to buffer the water..

Sounds good. I'd never heard of using coral in a freshwater tank before. I'll have to try it. For now its bare bottom, just finished taking the gravel out. Waters a little murky now, once its all settled I'll vacuum out the crap on the bottom and hopefully it will look nice. Once I get moved I might try some crushed coral.

crushed coral contains calcium carbonate which is good at stabilizing Ph and raising hardness slowly. i just ordered some after i discovered the water here has no elements and minerals in it, 0 Alkalinity and 0 general hardness. which is lethal to fish longevity.

all the breeders and private fish sales people use crushed coral in their filters here.
