I personally like the idea of the sand but aside from the filter problem im not to sure about the best way to clean the sand, when i use my siphon it pulls out soo much sand that it can cover the bottom of my bucket in a couple of inches. any easy way to clean the sand? or do you just stir the waters and do water changes?

To siphon sand, just hold the tube about and in above the sand and the poop should be pulled up, if it doesn't you can move the siphon in a small circular motion to try and stir the poop up at which point you can siphon the poop up.

i just bought some gravel by CaribSea.. the gravel is called Peace River. It's the smallest gravel I found, and almost looks like sand but is much heavier of course so it won't get stuck in the filters. I bought it off ebay.

Above is a link to the 3M stuff, cheaper than most of the subsrates LFS sells. Depending on the source you can get the stuff from $15-$25 per 50lbs. Tahiation (SP??) Moon sand or what ever it is called is like $20-$25 per 25lbs. If you need a large amount of substrate say 100lbs or more the 3M CQ is a inexpensive option. The stuff is also inert.
